Film Fundamentals: A tactical approach to screenwriting, complete with script generation, text analysis, and production skills.
NJPL Collective Dramaturgs with expertise in writing and producing for the screen lead a small group of workshop members through hands-on generative and educational screenwriting work to prepare the writer for filmmaking.
Why? We’ve seen a shift in the American film industry from writers getting opportunities solely based on sold/optioned scripts, contests, apprenticeships, spec work, etc…
Writers today are succeeding with self-created and self-produced work, even on small scales and budgets. The NJPL curriculum is a direct reflection of that; we prepare you with the tools and mentality to make films, not just write them.
We recommend this program for:
- Writers who are brand new to film
- Writers who have a body of film work, but struggle to bridge the gap between writing and producing
- Writers who have had some formal training, but wish to focus their screenwriting process through dramaturgy
- Writers who are engaged in other NJPL Development programs and wish to broaden their toolkit
- Theater and film professionals who wish to improve their text analysis and script understanding
- Producers and Directors looking to expand their knowledge base through writing and facility of language around the new script development process.
Upon completion of this fundamentals workshop, participants will have:
- Have written two short scripts: one (1) minute film, and one five to ten (5-10) minute film
- A firm foundation in the language of screenwriting–and the commitment to your story and style–to ensure maximum benefit from any subsequent development process. When you receive feedback, you will know how to act on it!
- The insight to offer value to a filmmaking community and give actionable feedback on their work. You will be the most cherished member of your cohort!
- The tools to approach production in order to make your movies. Make films that represent your voice and elevate your career!
Please note that there will be approximately 1-2 hours of work required between
sessions.
